If you and I were sitting late at night talking about manga — the kind of deep conversation where coffee gets cold and time disappears — and you asked me, “Tell me the full story of Berserk…”

I wouldn’t give you a short answer.

Because Berserk isn’t just a manga. It’s pain. It’s ambition. It’s betrayal. It’s survival. It’s what happens when a human being refuses to die even when the world wants him broken.

So let’s walk through it slowly — from the Golden Age Arc to the Fantasia Arc — like old friends remembering something unforgettable.

1. The Beginning: Black Swordsman Arc

Before we see friendship… before we see hope… we meet Guts as a monster hunter.

He’s alone.
He’s brutal.
He has a massive sword bigger than most men.

At this point, the world feels dark and hopeless. Apostles (humans transformed into demons) rule in the shadows. Guts hunts them mercilessly.

He has the Brand of Sacrifice burned into his neck — which attracts demons every night.

We don’t yet know why.

But we see hatred. We see rage. We see a man who has already lost everything.

Only later do we understand what happened.

2. Golden Age Arc – The Rise of a Dream

Now the story shifts back in time.

This is where everything changes.

Guts’ Childhood

Guts was born from a corpse — literally. His mother died hanging from a tree. He was raised by mercenaries. Abuse. War. Survival.

No love.
No protection.
Only fighting.

That’s why strength became everything to him.

Meeting Griffith

Then he meets Griffith.

Griffith isn’t just a warrior. He’s a dreamer. Charismatic. Beautiful. Intelligent.

He leads the Band of the Hawk, a mercenary group rising through war-torn Midland.

Griffith defeats Guts in combat and claims him as his soldier.

At first, Guts resents it.

But slowly, something new forms — belonging.

The Band of the Hawk

This arc is full of war campaigns. Strategic brilliance. Victories that elevate Griffith from mercenary leader to national hero.

We meet:

  • Casca – loyal commander, emotionally complex.
  • Judeau
  • Pippin
  • Corkus
  • Rickert

For the first time, Guts laughs. Eats with friends. Fights for something bigger.

And something else grows — Casca’s feelings for Griffith… and eventually for Guts.

The Dream Conversation

One night, Guts overhears Griffith say:

A true friend is someone who has his own dream.

That line changes everything.

Guts realizes:
He’s fighting for Griffith’s dream — not his own.

So he leaves.

And that single decision destroys everything.

3. The Fall – Griffith’s Collapse

When Guts leaves, Griffith emotionally breaks.

He makes a reckless mistake — sleeps with Princess Charlotte.

He gets imprisoned. Tortured for a year.

When the Band rescues him, Griffith is no longer the shining leader.

He’s broken. Tongue cut. Body destroyed.

And then comes the moment that defines Berserk.

4. The Eclipse – The Most Devastating Event in Manga

Griffith activates the Crimson Behelit.

The world shifts into a nightmare dimension.

The God Hand appear.

God Hand — demonic beings who control causality.

Griffith is offered a choice:

Sacrifice everything
Or remain broken forever.

He chooses sacrifice.

Every member of the Band of the Hawk is branded and slaughtered by demons.

Guts fights like a madman.

But he cannot save them.

And then…

Griffith, reborn as Femto, violates Casca in front of Guts.

It’s not just betrayal. It’s annihilation of trust.

Guts loses an arm and an eye trying to reach her.

Only Rickert survives because he wasn’t present.

This is the birth of the Black Swordsman.

5. Conviction Arc – Rage and Faith

Now we return to present timeline.

Guts wanders alone again. But now with purpose: kill apostles. Kill Griffith.

Casca survives but her mind is shattered.

We are introduced to:

  • Farnese de Vandimion
  • Serpico
  • Isidro
  • Schierke

The world expands. Religion becomes central.

The Holy See hunts heretics. A false prophet, Mozgus, commits horrific torture in the name of God.

Guts protects Casca during chaos in Albion.

Griffith reincarnates physically into the world.

Now he’s no longer just a demon god — he walks as a human king.

6. Millennium Falcon Arc – The World Changes

Griffith builds a new Band of the Hawk — but this time filled with apostles.

He defeats the Kushan Empire.

He creates Falconia — a shining utopia.

But it’s built on horror.

Meanwhile, Guts forms his own party. A small group traveling to restore Casca’s mind.

He obtains the Berserker Armor from Skull Knight.

The armor gives him insane power — but slowly destroys his body and sanity.

This arc blends war, magic, political rise, and supernatural chaos.

The physical and astral worlds begin merging.

Reality starts breaking.

7. Fantasia Arc – A New World

After massive battles, Griffith defeats Ganishka and merges the worlds completely.

Now monsters roam freely.

Humanity gathers under Falconia for protection.

Guts and his group reach Elfhelm — island of mages.

Casca’s mind is restored.

But when she sees Guts, trauma overwhelms her.

Then the truth emerges.

The Moonlight Boy — a mysterious child protecting Guts — is actually connected to Griffith.

Griffith appears on Elfhelm.

He takes Casca.

And vanishes.

Elfhelm collapses.

And that’s where the story stands.

Themes That Make Berserk Eternal

This isn’t just sword fights.

It’s about:

1. Causality vs Free Will

Are we slaves to fate?

2. Dreams vs Humanity

Griffith sacrificed everything for a dream.

Guts fights for people.

3. Trauma and Healing

Casca’s mental collapse is written with brutal realism.

4. Survival

Guts doesn’t fight to win.
He fights to keep moving.

After Kentaro Miura

The creator, Kentaro Miura, passed away in 2021.

Fans feared the story would remain unfinished.

But his close friend and team at Studio Gaga continue it, following Miura’s notes.

The story moves forward — slowly, respectfully.

Final Thoughts

If you ask me what Berserk truly is…

It’s not about revenge.

It’s about endurance.

It’s about standing up even when the universe crushes you.

Guts doesn’t fight because he believes he’ll win.

He fights because giving up means becoming nothing.

And maybe that’s why Berserk hits so deeply.

Because in some way, we’re all carrying something heavy.

And like Guts…

We just keep walking.
